I have today had a call from someone who needs help with a 4 week old runt puppy who has been rejected by its mother. The family feel unable to be able to give it the time and attention it needs - but feels if it can reach 8 weeks old it may have a chance. I have never ever had a dog this young and am somewhat apprehensive about saying yes I will help - as I would hate to be responsible should anything happen to it. Has anyone here had such a young pup and do they need 24/7 care at that age - I am presuming that they do. I am in a bit of a dilemma as I would also hate to think of it suffering due to lack of help or tryng.

It is in the Turriff area of N E Scotland - I would be willing to try but have yet to convince a reluctant OH and I am unsure exactly of what would be needed.

how amenable is your vet to emergency phone calls?

if it's a specific breed, you could contact the breed rescue, and see if they have anybody who'd be willing to receive calls in the middle of the night if necessary

I have a friend who's used to being wetnurse to such pups, so I could ask her if she's willing to be a helpline for you if the above throws up dead ends

if you google 'hand rearing pup' you'll find many websites (alot of them breed specific ones) with instructions on how to hand rear - have a read through a couple so you can gauge whether you think you can manage this, but as it's a first time for you, make sure you have somebody experienced who's happy to be at the end of a phone for you Thumbsup

Thanks for the replies - the pup is a cross breed and my vets are quite good - we have taken dogs to them late in the evening before - thankfully. Hope to see it Friday evening - and it all depends on whether I get clearance yet from him indoors too. I will find out as much as possible about hand rearing just in case !
