|
|
Ive been looking into running a fun dog show to raise some funds for RAIN. I run the local riding club (Rotherham) so am proposing to run the show alongside one of our horse shows so that we can include it in our advertising. The riding club will provide all the rosettes etc....
What I need help with is a schedule/judges etc... From the investigating that I have done people are saying that I need to get a kennel club licsence to run a companion dog show
Any help would be much appreciated.
Also if anyone is free and wants to come and help on 25 May that would be great.

I shall check my Rota Louise and let you know if i am free but even if not free on the day i would be happy to help with anything you need people to do, although i warn you am not very arty/creative but will give most things a go
I know someone who is great with posters/leaflets so if you would like help with advertising i can ask her and i am sure we can find places to advertise the show and bring people in.
It is a lovely thing you are doing and i am sure Jacqui and Sue are incredibly grateful as the money pots are running low and more and more dogs needing homes so raising awareness is a great thing.
I don't know if you use any forums but i am known as Adz on another well known one I really should have kept the same name is a bit confusing but you can contact me either way

I would be more than willing to judge but im not up on breed standards etc but if you want volunteers id do it.
As for entry fees the ones i have been to last year generally charge 1 per class and have a number of different classes e.g Vetran, Puppy, Pedigree, Mixed Breed, Junior Handler etc etc
My dodger used to love them but worry he is getting too old now and left on a high 2nd Best in Show at Retford!!!!!! _________________

Thank you Kay that would be great ! Its fun thing so I dont thing it matters about breeds.
Ive had to put the rosette order in as we needed to get the order in. So ive provisionally ordered 10 sets but can add to these.
So far Ive got:
Best Puppy (under 6 months)
Waggiest Tail
Best 6 legs
Prettiest Bitch
Most Handsome Dog
Veteran
Dog the judge would most like to take home
Best 6 legs
Junior Handler - what ages limit is best ?
Best Trick
I thought about charging £1.50 per class or 4 classes for £5 - that encourages people to sepnd a bit more which is what we want.
Im also waiting to hear back from Pets at Home about some raffle prizes.

I like your classes - the fun ones do tend to get the best entries.
I've been thinking - now at this point anyone who knows me run for cover
Let me first of all bore you to tears with an explanation of who 'we' are and then I'll get to the point. For the past 10 or so years we have been going out and about with a group of people who once were owned pre-dominantly by Bernese Mountain Dogs. We are invited to assorted events up and down the country with the dogs - who all pull carts - and raise money under the name of The Carters Fund for Health and Rescue. There are other groups up and down the country, that are only Bernese Mountain dogs that attend the same sort of events as we do.
At the end of our carting year we have a Christmas party in February and decide where our money should be spent. Over the years we have supported the AHT - at this time most of the dogs were Berns and have a very short life span and 40% of their recorded deaths were from cancer and cancer related illness, the AHT were doing research into cancers in dogs, so it seemed logical to go there. Over the years things have changed at the AHT, the lead researcher left for the USA and our dogs aren't all Berns anymore. We now support rescue centres in areas where we attend events, we have given a small donation to RainRescue, our own breed rescues (Bullmastiffs, Bernese Mountain Dogs), have sponsored a kennel for a year at Hearing Dogs for the Deaf, have helped to fund research into a project assessing the effectiveness of homeopathy and alternative therapies working alongside conventional medicines where chemotherapy/radiotherapy isn't an option (so far results are looking promising, some of the dogs have had an extension to their life but more importantly a better quality of life) to name but a few.
When we are at events we are always happy to meet people and talk to them about the dogs and some come along 'to have a go' in the carts.
Which is the long winded way of saying - would you like a few of us who live relatively local to you to come olong with our dogs and carts? Would you even have some space at this event for a few of us? We could show you what we do - nothing spectacular but it'll give you a laugh and let the punters and their dogs have a go (don't worry our people do the supervision, handling etc) at £1 a go into the collection pot on the day.
Have a think and if we'll fit in let me know and we can sort something out - if you don't want us or there won't be space that's fine too - it was just a thought _________________

You could split the junior section into two with an 12's and under and a 12 to 16 class or something.
How about doing a fancy Dress Class that is usually quite funny.
You would probably need an age limit on the vetran class as well for example 8+
How about a Dog who looks most like its owner????
You could do an overall best in show in which all the first places can compete for the title and get a silly trophy or something.
Erm think that is it for the minute will get back to you if i think of anything else. _________________

You may get more entries if you drop to a pound a class or 50p per class - that way people will enter everything they can do and be involved in the day. We had this debate on another forum a while back, where they were proposing to charge more than pedigree shows for entry! or the other way to go is maybe £2 for first class entered and significantly less for all others after that - so maybe 50p or £1?
I can ask if my judging friend is free that weekend if you like - she does foster rescue dogs so isn't biased in favour of pedigree dogs like some on the circuit

Thank you everyone for your kind offers.
Having a bit of a hick with the riding club at the moment as we are currently homeless. Hopefully not for long so as soon as that is sorted out I can focus my attention back to this. I am confident that we will still be able to run it on 25 May.

Cheers Lou
So, do you have a final list of what shows they are going to be holding?
I think £1.50 is cheap really - can't remember how much was charged at the Halfway Home one last weekend, but they were flooding in
but also like the idea of the £2.00 first entry -
how much are pony club classes?
Hoochie Coochie would be a great crowd puller - can't we get her involved in anything else with it as well - Hooch would be good
Also, don't hold out too much hope on the entry person you were hoping for - i heard a few excuses coming out the other nght.
I would offer, but I would get in a flap and forget things - but i can always help along with someone else. _________________ Order your pet supplies online and support Rain Rescue

We are back on and I think classes should be :
Best Puppy (under 6 months)
Waggiest Tail
Best 6 legs
Prettiest Bitch
Most Handsome Dog
Veteran
Dog the judge would most like to take home
Best 6 legs
Junior Handler - what ages limit is best ?
Best Trick
For this to be a sucess we need lots of help - I am happy to coordinate everything but on the day I will be taking entries for the horse show.
Our entry fee's for the horse show is £5 per class of 5 classes for £20
Im happy to charge with whatever people want to for the dog show - Give me your feedback and I will get it sorted out and generate schedule.
Please can you let me or Jacqui know if you can help.
Jacqui - I will be disapointed if our helper doesn't turn up !!!!
