Well, I haven't had one for a while. I decided to count how many pups were for sale in there. (Approximately) For some reason, there weren't many kittens/cats.

580 these were young, majority advertised as not kc reg (although some were) some advertised as short tailed (I'm presuming docked).

On top of that there were about 200 under 2 year old dogs. (My calculations work that out at over a third of puppies sold in ad mag... end up for sale again in ad mag within 2 years of purchase, although there is no way of knowing they were all bought from Ad mag in the first place, this is just a presumption).

This makes me a little mad! but not surprised. I am going to attempt placing an ad in here myself, they probably wont want to print what I want to say though.

So, what shall I put?

Please consider the thousands of dogs in rescue before breeding puppies.

Please be a responsible owner and have your new dog "done".

Do you know how to train a puppy? If not why not learn before you purchase?

Why not home a rescue dog? Try your local rescue/dog pound.

What message would you want to give?

well done Jess,
yes - we did something like that before, and I found it really strange that there weren't any trainers or puppy classes advertised either, when there is such a captive audience with those new owners.

Maybe just put in there (if the admag will let you because they sometimes wont)

KILLED 8000+ dogs in 2007 - because nobody wanted them?

Think - can you help one of those dogs to live - instead of breeding more puppies into the world?

Look at your local rescue centre for details

great idea - advertising and education are the ONLY WAY FORWARD - but i just don't end up having the time to do more with it.

if you're serious about doing this Jess, perhaps a call to admag before you start to explain what you'd like to do and why, and ask them to help you phrase it? - that way you've a better chance of ensuring it actually gets into print

other points wrt to this topic:

    selling puppies is tax declarable
could you watch a puppy you bred be PTS? or would you take him/her back?
do you really have the time for a puppy?
dogs are not toys - do your kids REALLY understand a dog's needs?
