Hi everyone!

I joined the forum tonight, after adopting THE most adorable/beautiful/gorgeous (aren't they all!!) dog today from Roz's rescue kennels at Wansford - her name's Betty!

Just wanted to say a massive thank you to both Jaquie and Roz for pairing me with her - she's perfect, and my other rescue cutie loves her already.

On a very sobering note, while I was at the kennels to meet Betty, a call came in about 10 dogs in a pound due to be put to sleep on Xmas Eve... Thanks to the work you good people do, these dogs are ALL being removed to a place that's safe, and where they have a real chance to find loving, happy homes. Up until a week ago I didn't know what went on in 'the pound'. Now I know, I'm telling everyone and anyone who'll listen.

I think you guys are absolute heroes, and I salute you all.

I hope you (and all of your furry loved ones!) have an extremely Merry Christmas.

Much puppy love,

Vikki XXX

Hiya Vikki Smile welcome to the forum Smile

It's interesting how the general public view the facilities for dogs now we have so many 'rescue centres'. Too many people seem to think that if they turf their dog out on the streets, it'll find a new home - somehow. I got chatting to somebody in pets at home who was petting Brude, and when I mentioned our fostering, and that we rescue dogs from being put to sleep, she said 'oh! do they still do that?!?'

I wonder if some people would be more careful about what happens to their dogs if they knew there was a good chance they'd be PTS Suspicious

PS - which part of P'boro are you in? we used to live there too Smile

Hiya Vikki
Roz phoned me and said that she had found the perfect match for you

Thank you so much for the donation of bottles - i think Roz is going to raffle them off.
She needs money more than i do bless her - i don't know how she keeps going. She has a heart of gold

So, if you have managed to help one of hers - that means she can help one more

Ros always needs dog food and blankets - and anyone could help by begging the food manufacturers for decent food to be donated.
Christ knows these companies make enough money out of dogs - they could give some back to those in needs.

One of the pounds, moves their dogs out to temprorary boarding until Trudie (another helper), manages to get them out. They struggle getting food and because they don't charge - there isn't any money floating around

so Vikki - if you have any spare time, and want to do something to help

get begging - food - toys, coats - blankets - beds - you get it - we know someone who will use it

thanks for joining us on our little forum - keep in touch
x
jacquie

Hi Jacquie -

I'm on the case. I've got a week off early in Feb, and I want to use alot of that time to be on the 'phone begging for anything useful. In the meantime we're doing local collections for anything a dog needs or can use - family and friends are all supporting what you guys do and are pitching in. Also, where I work has agreed to hold an 'animal day' in the new year - pay to 'dress down', food/toy/bedding amnesty, raffle etc. Anything 'dog related' that we get/raise will be yours.

I'll be seeing Roz in the next week or so, so hopefully we'll be able to generate some more ideas.

Thanks again for helping me to find Betty - she's great! She's already got her eye on the Turkey and the potatoes, and I know that tomorrow some of it will end up in her and Dolly's dish!

Hi Vikki
so lovely to have you on board

I felt really comfortable each time i spoke to you
its amazing how people really don't know whats happening out there in the stray dog world. the problem is that the more you know - the more its upsetting and the more you have to do something to help

The way i look at it is that the more people we can get on board to do something the better it is for the dogs. Plus it shares the problems and the work loads. We can all do something. People that want to be hands on - can help but for those that can't do that, there are loads of things that us that are snowed under can't get to grips with - but are SO VITAL.

I am so pleased you are going to be able to help Roz. She takes in and helps so many dogs and yet doesn't have any helpers - I really don't know how she manages.
She is a lovely lovely lady with a heart of gold. I will help you to help her any way that I can.
I have loads of ideas - just no time to follow things through.
I also think that once we start to get more people involved - the easier the work load will be. Ihope we can raise lots of money and beg lots of things for Roz.
Why not start a thread for her rescue - Roz'z Animal Helpline - how we are helping?

I am so pleased to have you on board Vikki - I feel you will be a valued member of the team
Jacquie

Hi -

It's wierd - I haven't encountered anyone so far who said "oh yes, I know that's going on". One of the things I want to do/am doing is to highten awareness, as the people I've been speaking to are shocked that this is happening.

After I spoke to you initially, I asked my local Council what their policy was on the poundies. They were SO cagey!!!! In the end (after alot of messing around) they told me that they don't PTS any 'healthy' dog (I imagine that term has a pretty broad spectrum). I feel so angry that we call ourselves a nation of animal lovers, when people like Roz and the rest of you guys have to flog themeselves half to death in order to keep these dogs safe!

Anyway, on a more positive note... the lady who looks after Dolly (and now Betty!) during the day while I'm at work used to run a charity over in Dubai rescuing dogs (they're even more inhumane over there apparently). I'm going to pick her brains for ideas. If I can pick yours too, then I should have some excellent stuff to take to Roz for her consideration/approval. I could PM you or give you a call if thats ok?? The other thing I thought of (if it's not been done somewhere already on the site or Forum) is to pick everyones brains, and list all fundraising ideas centrally. It'd save re-inventing the wheel, and I bet there are some stonking ideas out there to raise money etc. I'd be happy to start that thread if its ok with you guys, and collate the list for submission??

Vikki. X

Hia Vikki
This problem is huge - i just want to wave a magic wand and everyone to be nice to other people and to animals - sadly i have to accept - people are usually either horrible or ignorant -

so, i just have to accept i can change a little - but not a lot

To begin with - i think we need some food companies to give some food - Roz is desperate for some, as is Trudie for many of her kennels. I think if we just stopped and had a think what each person needs, and tackles things gradually - we would achieve more. Money isn't the only thing in such demand - there are freebies that can be donated which they may want to do - more than give cash.

Why not make a list of all the food manufacturers around, and phone them up - or write to them?
you can address it for Roz's rescue and although she isn't a registered charity - she has enough that people can see the work that she does.
if they need a registered charity - you can use my summerfields - Life Skills through Pet Care - and then we will dish it out to who needs it

Truly every bit of help is always appreciated - we fell bog down with it all and i don't know how poor Roz manages with all the dogs in that she has, as well as scratching for money. So, any help that you can give her - is really at the core of it all.

i am always open for you to ask me questions if you ever need it
jaq
