Have you ever consulted a dog behaviourist or taken your dog to training classes?

what were your experiences?

there is a move to begin regulation of dog trainers and behaviourists, as at the moment anybody can hire a venue or place an ad in the paper, and call themselves a dog trainer or behaviourist

I took Brude to a club in Wath having asked the kennel club for local classes, but wasn't aware that it was going to be a ringcraft class before we attended. It turned out to be a great class, with show style obedience after the ringcraft sessions, and everybody was very friendly and helpful, but I've been to others where the regime is much more strict, and even one where mastifs owners were doing an agility course (I cringed at the idea of what this did to their joints) and Rottweilers were whacked in the face with a plastic bottle full of stones by the 'trainer'

I have also seen a very difficult dog who has been to a holistic therapist greatly improve having had a range of different treatments including a change in diet

should any tom dick or harry be able to offer dog training advice?...

... and where does that leave people like me who respond to people's queries on the internet?!

I have taken 4 of my dogs to training classes 2 with the same trainer and two with to diffferent Community Hall type of classes - with very differing approaches.

The tutor with the a recognised accreditation [APDT] was by far the best which is why I returned to her and telephone her when I have the odd problem (or two).

Personally I believe that correct diet and exercise has an enormous amount to play in behaviour too. In on one of Hall type classes the instructor got bitten as she was intent on getting a bull breed to sit bolt straight upright like her collie - the level of attendance suddenly dropped dramatically after that !

are bullies capable of sitting bolt upright? Confused

... but that comes back to what I always say about having to understand the breed you're dealing with - even if it's a cross breed you have!

does anybody else have any experience of training or behaviourists?
