Hi all

I was grabbed by a customer earlier today to tell me that his nephew has a 6 month old bitch 'Canary' Dog which needs a new home in the next few days. He wouldn't go into detail but assured me it was not the dogs fault and that she was not aggressive.

I know this is a rare breed in the UK and also that they need firm handling and an experienced owner....can anyone help or point me in the direction of someone who can?

Thanks

the best I can do Sooz is give you some links to suitable information:

I'm assuming here that you're asking for info as this dog is believed to be covered by the dangerous dogs act? (which I'll see if I can confirm)

this is the dangerous dogs act 1991:
http://www.opsi.gov.uk/acts/acts1991/Ukpga_19910065_en_1.htm
which specifically says:
Quote:
(2) No person shall—

(a) breed, or breed from, a dog to which this section applies;

(b) sell or exchange such a dog or offer, advertise or expose such a dog for sale or exchange;

(c) make or offer to make a gift of such a dog or advertise or expose such a dog as a gift;

(d) allow such a dog of which he is the owner or of which he is for the time being in charge to be in a public place without being muzzled and kept on a lead; or

(e) abandon such a dog of which he is the owner or, being the owner or for the time being in charge of such a dog, allow it to stray.

amendment 1997 (which does not negate the above quoted paragraph):
http://www.opsi.gov.uk/acts/acts1997/ukpga_19970053_en_1

and with respect to breed:

the Presa Canaria is listed amongst the alternative names that are on the banned breeds list (see page 5)
http://www.defra.gov.uk/animalh/welfare/domestic/ddogsleaflet.pdf

It's not looking good for rehoming if this is indeed a Presa Canaria

I dont know if i read that page wrong then strix because i interpretet it as that is a name people have given to Pitbulls to hide the fact they are a pitbull. I watched a programme once when they tryed to say a Pitbull was a boxer x lab but they are not on the list!!!!

They are not on a banned list but i imagine she would be difficult to rehome, dont know why i thought she was going to be Yellow how nieve am i Rolling Eyes
