My husband told me today about a story he heard at work regarding an 'artist' who tied a dog in the corner of an art gallery and allowed it to starve to death in the name of modern art. I thought he must have been mistaken but I found this article (unfortunately with pictures).
http://luckybunnynyc.blogspot.com/2007/10/starving-dog-as-art-utter-outrage.html
Has anybody heard of this? Is it really true?
The reason they were talking about this at my husband's office is apparently it was such a successful exhibit they are considering repeating it for 2008 so there is a petition against it (which I can't locate online).
I have been so upset about this today that I just can not get the images out of my head, I couldn't eat my tea cause I felt so sickened by it. I can't believe that this could have been allowed to happen without making international news which is why I am questioning if anyone else has heard about it. Would like to hear it isn't true.

It would seem that this is at least partly a fake story. I say partly because the fact is the dog was a starving stray but the 'artist' kindly let the dog back onto the streets after it's three hour appearance in the gallery. The artist and gallery owner say it was a social experiment, well I can think of a few experiments I could subject them to - heartless idiots.

this did do the rounds of forums at the time, and it's been highlighted in the same places this time round, but that's the first time I've seen any sort of claim that the dog was actually released rather than being allowed to die

whilst I'd like more people to appreciate the plight of the domestic dog, there are countries on this planet which have more of a problem with 'stray' children which should be tackled first, and I can't help feeling that this stunt was more to make an impact for the artist than it was to actually highlight the plight of the dogs

it looks like it was successful Suspicious

what's the betting that there is no intention to repeat the exercise, it's just another chance to milk the publicity from the last 'show'?

cynical aren't I Wink

I posted this actually before the link to the petition appeared on the main Rain Rescue website.
I completely agree that the stunt was to earn publicity for the gallery and the artist, I have no doubt at all that this was their motivation and as you say they have certainly succeeded. They have tried to pass it off as some kind of social experiment to justify it and provide some kind of reasoning and basically beacuse they can't just admit it was for publicity!
I still found the images really disturbing though and it made me feel quite sick. I just can't understand how anybody can use another creature's suffering for their own gain, it is beyond my comprenhension I'm afraid.

Hope you are well by the way Strix xxx

I'm pretty much ignoring this 'thing' on the same basis I don't reply to round robin emails or texts - it feeds the flames Suspicious

I've been waiting for a text to organise a dog walk btw Wink
