Hi this is a bit long winded but bare with me
About a year ago my wife got diagnosed with leukemia we went through a bone marrow transplant chemo the whole thing then just when we thought we had got through the worst of it the leukemia came back this was about 4 weeks ago
To cut a long story short the doctors have given my wife months to live but she is fighting everyday and currently in hospital
I also have an 11 yr old girl who is being remarkably strong through all this
When my wife came out of hospital in January after the transplant she was looking forward to seeing out border collie cross Daz who we have had for 17yrs
He had not been well for a few months just getting very old thats all and couldnt get around
She had asked him to hold on till she got home (a little silly i know but it gave her comfort)
On the day before i fetched my wife he had soiled his bed and couldnt get out and the same the next day
When she got home we had to call the vet out he said the kindest thing was to put him to sleep as he couldnt move around or go to the toilet
You cant imagin how hard that was
We both miss him terribly and the house seems empty without a dog
What im really trying to ask is im finding it very hard to find another pup (we got Daz from the rspca place in Sheffield )
I cant afford a pup in the adverts ive been looking at £200 to £500
When my wifes time comes i really will need the joy and attention a dog brings back in the house
I work as a postman so im home from around 1.00pm but have someone to see to the dog while im at work
Then they will get my full attention as soon as im home
What is the best way to find a pup that wont cost the earth in Sheffield

Many thx

Steve

To be honest i was looking more towards a spaniel either a cocker or springer but im very open to the right dog
Sometimes you set your sites on one thing then see totally the opposite and get smitten

Thx

So very sorry to hear about what a hard time you are all having at the moment Sad have you tried the rescue centres maybe there will be just the right dog in one somewhere for you, also there are rescues for springer and cocker spaniels, although a pup might be a tall order you could make all the difference to the life of a dog who needs a second chance.
I wish you every luck in finding the right dog for you, and I do hope that it may bring you a little joy in this hard time.

Hi Mojothefish Smile

so sorry to hear of the circumstances under which you've joined us, but welcome aboard Thumbsup

firstly, I hope you don't mind, but I'm moving your thread into our 'homes available' section, just incase any of the rescues we have reading us are avoiding the fun section

secondly - (and please don't think I'm saying this with my rescue hat on, as I'm a middle ground person who owns a full pedigree dog bought as a pup Wink ), but reading about your circumstances, can I ask you to get in touch with one or two breed rescue societies? with so much going on in your house at the moment, perhaps a pup who requires SO much of your attention for now is not the best thing? there are some fantastic dogs out there who have lost their homes due to their owners being in a similar situation as yourselves but deciding they can't deal with a dog too, and a non-giddy, pre-trained dog may fit into your home a lot quicker and provide the comfort you're looking for much more easily Smile

if you do contact a breed rescue, don't feel pressured into taking the first dog you see - that's just not how it works. You could contact breeders who have retiring show or breeding stock too

and of course there is the option of adopting a dog who was due to be PTS via one of the independant rescues advertising on the main RainRescue website at www.rainrescue.co.uk - I have fostered two wonderful pets who have lost their homes through no fault of their own, and who have gone on to new loving owners who find them no trouble at all - one Rottweiler who was only supposed to be here for more flattering photo's to be taken but managed to stay the week as she was SO little bother, and a Beagle who was harder work but who turned out to be a lovely dog once she's sussed that we don't allow the dogs to call the shots round here!

good luck in your quest, and do keep us posted Smile

Hi ive been looking at the springer adoption pages
I think if possible this is the breed id like to take on
And from your advice perhaps a pup is a little too much too soon ,but on the same score i couldnt bear haveing to old a dog incase they suffered problems with age
Theres only so much grief one person can take
So my main concern is i dont drive how would this work adoption wise and what is the best place in or very near sheffield to find Springers wanting adoption

Many thx

Steve

Smile get in touch with the breed rescue, and they'll be able to tell you if they have a suitable dog within a reasonable distance

don't worry about finding an elderly dog - many younger dogs (and I'd suggest one approx 3-5 years old) also need new homes due to unfortunate circumstances such as divorce

the breed rescue (or maybe a volunteer here) may be able to help out with transport for you Smile

Hi all just to let you all know my wife passed away on Saturday in her sleep at the hospital and not in any pain after 18 mnths of fighting
When the funeral is over and life gets back to "normal" we are going to get a dog
I have decided to go for a cocker spanial pup from a private sale if possible even tho we would be looking at £350 to £450
Please could someone point me in the right direction for reputable breeders as i dont want to buy from someone who is after a quick buck so to speak

Many thx

Steve

PS Id love a rescue dog but sometimes you just cant find the one you really want

so sorry to hear your news Steve Sad It sounds like things happened as peacefully as was possible, but it still doesn't make it any easier really does it? Crying or Very sad

WRT a new dog, have you put your name down for a pup with the breed rescue anyway? it isn't necessarily that unusual for pups to wind up homeless - some people just don't realise that pups are more work than they are fluffy and cute, and if they've come from a 'breeder' who doesn't have a lifetime returns policy, they could wind up being rehomed via breed rescue. If you're an experienced owner then you may be able to tackle an older pup that just needs a bit of firm handling to find it's feet

Having said that, and assuming you've made up your mind, the best place to find a good example of the breed (and ensure you're not feeding the puppy farm merry go round) is to attend a show, where you have a good opportunity to speak to a number of breeders at once and find out who's who and what their policies are (never buy from somebody who doesn't have a lifetime returns policy, as you're keeping them in business!). You may struggle to find a pup for the prices you've mentioned, but you may also have the opportunity to purchase a dog who's past the 10/12 week stage, was selected for showing, but isn't performing as hoped in the ring, or a bitch or dog who has previously been bred from

I'll get back to you with the dates and venue for the next big shows coming up

... and don't forget... the right dog usually finds you!
