Hello everyone,

Scrappy seems to have settled in pretty well, today is the first day I have left him alone while I go to work though so I only time will tell if the house and its contents will survive the day.

I am concerned about what look like ulcers on his chin and snout. When arriving back from taking him on walks the ulcers on his chin are soar and sometimes bleeding, probably because he loves fetching a ball and will bump his jaw when he scoops it up. I will be taking him to the vets asap but in the mean time was wondering if anyone had come across this before and if there is anything I can do to keep them from getting any worse.

Many thanks,

Jo.

He's a Lab X, looks like he might have a bit of rottweiler in him.

Thank you.

That's not something I've heard of before in either breed Confused

Do let us know what your vet says about it Thumbsup

If Scrappy is a young-ish dog and without seeing it - I would guess that he may have an outbreak of canine acne, it's quite common and nothing to worry about. Try to keep the area clean and dry and don't let him scratch it. If you are worried or if he is scratching, rubbing his head and the spots fill with pus or bleed then I would consult your vet - just to be on the safe side.

Some people recommend putting Sudocrem on the spots as this can help to dry them up or, alternatively a drop of lavender oil on them can be quite helpful.

Pure lavender oil or diluted with something?

Neat - just one drop is all that's needed - lavender and tea tree oils are the only two oils that can be used on the skin without diluting them first.

I use lavender on anything that needs drying up - dog chins are an easy area to apply the oil to, because you can go in from underneath, but sometimes when you go for around the muzzle area they get the smell first and because dogs have a heightened sense of smell the oils do make them sneeze and they don't all like it.

He has now been to see the vet. She suggested it was acne too.

I also noticed that he was limping and it turns out his pads are very soft, doesn't look like he has been walked much in the past, so each time we take him out it cuts his paws.

He's got antibiotics for this and I've noticed his pads have started to become harder over the past few days.

Many thanks,

Jo.
